Fuel shut-off won't shut-off?

I put new shut-off valve/sediment bowl on a few years ago and cleaned out carb. Recently (last few months?) noticed constant drip off carb float bowl and tractor hard starting cold (like way too rich)--figured out last piece of air intake hose to carb inlet is deteriorated and the carb is flooding (not while running but while sitting)--even with the shut off valve in the fully closed position it is allowing fuel to run from tank to carb. Figure needle seat is shot shot letting fuel by carb and filling intake hose.

I have ordered a new piece of air intake hose from metal pipe to carb inlet. ALso ordered a carb rebuild kit--

BUT seems like shut-off valve isn't working--why not? Any clues? Have not taken it apart yet--was waiiting for carb kit to do all at once.....DOUG

Hi! My 35 just done the same thing,The shut off valve on the sediment bulb just quit shutting off completely. I put a new bulb assmy. on it and it was fine. It was flooding out when it set for 2-3 days. This is the second one in 26 years for the same reason. I think the valve seat wears out.

just buy another cutoff and install it. remember old tractor is about 50 years old, not much that is 50+ years old works as well as it did when it was younger.

do not want to start that old tractor too many times with carb in a flooded condition as you draw raw gas into motor, not good for cylinder walls.

also install a inline fuel filter between cutoff and carb, will save you alot of carb headaches as fuel will be cleaner.

good luck,

i have the import replacement shut off valve with the glass bowl on mine and it is not very good quality. if i had it to do over again, i would leave the old one for visual effect then install a small brass petcock valve underneath with a genric inline gas filter in between.

also, the fuel line on mine is steel not rubber. i replaced it with a length of napa brake line i bent to fit.

It could be something under the valve between the seat and the valve, maybe dirt out of the tank. It should have a filter on top of the tap in the tank, they come off due to fuel sloshing around. "glue" a new one on top and don't use the reserve supply, that should keep the supply out of the crud in the bottom,There should be another flat gauze filter above the glass bowl. Take out the valve and let fuel run out to wash away anything that maybe in there. You should be able to see if the end of the Valve is damaged at all when you remove it to check it.If the inside of the tank is rusty then expect more problems as it breaks up, also check the fuel pipe, replace it with good quality line...John
