I'd guess he doesn't have the rest of the money to pay for the tractor and that's why he's avoiding you. You can't be expected to hold it forever. I think? you can legally keep his deposit but if you wanted to be nice, could return all or a portion of it. Then sell it to someone else. Try leaving a message that says he has 48 hours to contact you or he forfits his deposit. If that doesn't get a response, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it wants his deposit back, I'm sure he'll contact you. Might want to have a quick call to a lawyer to see if he's entitled to get his deposit back after 6 months. Dave

Even though a set term is not in writting, the law allows and observes what is "resonable". If you have the documentation of your extended attempts to contact him, the conversation with his wife confirming that you were calling the correct number, etc., I say you are clear to do whatever you wish once you have given him final notice.
Just to safe, maybe a certified letter that requires ONLY his signature, then he cannot come back on you at all.
If he signs it, he has been properly notified. If he refuses to sign it, you are free and clear.
