I recently purchased a 686 with the 312 and gear drive with a ta.What type and size plow would work well with this tractor. Will be plowing pasture in moderate to heavy
soil. There are a few 3 bottom 3 point plows nearby for sale.Any advice would be appreciated.Tractor has loaded 15.5/38s.I have a 656D also, thinking they should both
handle a 3x16 or 3x18 plow or perhaps a larger plow?

Thank's Paul

Possibly 4x16 in heavy pasture , and that will make it work , the 3 bottoms are possibly the easiest on you and the tractor but I would want larger ..

With 15.5x38, and if you have 1 wheel weight, that will be your limiting factor. Is there anyway to raise your draw bar ?

Well since we have to tell you what size then you are new to this here farming thing SOOOOOOoooo i will say that the 3x16 three point will be best for you . Yes it will pull four 16's IF it is weighted correctly but a semi mount plow take a bit of learning curve to plow with . even getting a three point plow set correctly takes a bit of learning. My buddy has farmed all his life but still can not get the hang of setting a semi mount plow and setting the draft sensing correctly . Years back i had a local VET ya know animal Dr. not a war vet come to me and wanted a three bottom semi mount plow , i was going to the big sale that i always went to and they had plows lots of plows to choose from . i found a like new Oliver three four bottom that was able to be change wright down to 14-16 inch bottoms and i bought them and brought them home . He had a 2520 deere like new to pull them with . I called him and told hi to come down and look at them and if he did not want them that was fine as i would sell them to and Oliver dealer i use to buy for . He came down and looked at them and they were set up as four bottoms when they came here , so he looks them all over and say that he will take them and how much to drop the forth bottom off and make it three , tryed to tell him that his tractor would pull it as is with no problem in his ground as i use to farm that ground and pulled a set of I H 540 4 bottoms with a Farmall 450 Diesel . But he want three and a 150 bucks extra to drop the forth bottom off was fine . Dropped the forth bottom and made the adjustment as PER the Olive manual stated and he picked up the plows the next evening . 8 o clock next morning i get a call from him that these plows will not plow wright and i did something wrong . SOOOOOooo out to his place to see what I DID WRONG and had him show me . Well with a semi mount you don't stuff the ft all the way down as far as it will go and wonder why you can not get a nice furrow and you can not keep the ft of the tractor on the ground . He got made at me when i told him that you have to level the plow and get you depth set correctly , he said he set the depth on the tail wheel and it should only plow that deep ah what about the ft. end , well you JUST PUSH THE HITCH ALL THE WAY DOWN AND IT SHOULD PLOW CORRECTLY you did something wrong . I had to show him and not only would it lay a nice furrow but it would fly with three bottoms when you were plowing at 8-10 inches deep The next year he had me put the forth bottom back on and still run fifth gear.

I wouldn't even dream of trying to break sod with a 4X16 with a 686 - unless you are only going to scratch at the surface.

I am thinking many people have there own opinions , as Andy said setting a plow is a learning process , I like trailer plows but they require more room to turn .

That's why I find it hard to work for other people. I'm always wrong, even after I show them what's right. It takes patience.

We pulled 4 16s with a gas 656 for years. We still had dairy herd so 1/4 of the farm was in alfalfa busted it over every spring. It was all it wanted though.
