Starter Problem On my H

OK, about 15 years ago, I changed the ol' H over to a 12-volt system (see below if I don't muck up posting the diagram). Yesterday, the starter switch gave out -- I was getting nothing through it. Thinking that the starter switch could be the original for all I knew, I simply got another today and installed it. It worked great all day; the tractor was started 8 or 10 times and there was no problem. An hour ago, the darn thing was doing what it did before -- nuthin'. I connected the battery charger, put it on START, and tried it, thinking maybe the old battery may be giving out as well. I got sparks. I checked the battery with a meter and read 13.2 volts across the terminals, but getting nothing through the starter switch again. What's causing me to destroy starter switches?

Clean all connections in charging and starting circuits. Make sure they are bright and tight, especially the ground cable at both battery terminal and frame. Do you have good battery cables with high quality post connectors.

I had the same problem on my H and it ended up being bad connections. About 2 months later it was a dead battery. I think the battery was bad when I got the tractor though.

you may have voltage but what about amperage for the battery? That switch is just that; switching on or off. the solenoid could be drawing more amps then the switch can handle.

Now we're talkin'! I was wondering if something like this was happening, but, to be honest, I had no idea where to go with it. Thanks, JAsher452x! I'll run the starter to the local guys who know this stuff, and have it checked tomorrow.

If its the starter switch in the rear tank support or on the steering post you mean. May also want to check it, some are not a very good quality and some aren't the correct height. Remove battery cable to frame from battery. Take a good set of jumper cables, hook to battery posts. Run the one to starter post and after shining up a starter mounting bolt touch the one on post you removed cable from to the starter bolt. If that makes a difference you have a bad connection, a bad switch. Provided battery is okay.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the help. Turns out, it was a corroded positive battery cable. I checked ALL connections -- cleaned
'em up as suggested. Also had the starter checked, but it's just fine. However, I noticed a little greenish color on
the positive cable, in between the separate wires, just under the clamp on the cable terminal. Checked it out further, cut off a couple inches, and --
well, the ol' H hasn't started this easily and run this well in all the years I've had it! New cables are in my future!

Farmall H equipped with a #31 McCormick loader. A combination that is just about as handy as it gets.

You bet! I adapted a blade on the front, and that puppy clears my lane of snow every year!
