Farmall H Head

Hi-
I just put the head on my Farmall H and for some reason some of the studs look to be too short in the location they are in. I know that there were 5 that were a little longer than the rest and I know that those are in the correct location on the block. Why might these other ones be a little short? I have not yet torqued the nuts down...Am I able to back the studs out a little bit so that the nuts catch more threads on the stud?

Any information would be great.
Thanks

I was told that a stud in cast should be threaded in at least half again it's diameter, e.g.: a half inch stud should be threaded in at least 3/4". As long as it has sufficient threads in the block, I see no reason you can't 'stretch' it by backing it out a bit. Just check the thread length, and put some Loc-tite on 'em to keep the length where is needs to be.

Originally the studs had a slight interference fit in the threads so they would stay in place without being screwed all the way into the block.

1.5 x nominal diameter is normal. Generally, more than that doesn't give you any more strength.
