Farmall 450 diesel rear seal

Hey guys, I'm having a difficult time in locating a
rear seal for my D-281 engine. My local Case IH
dealer can't get one, and Powermax says that they
no longer carry them. Does anyone know where I
can locate one? Thank you.

I've located a deal with the correct part number at Cooper Tractor (271794R91), but it says it fits a TD-6 with a D248 engine, however, it does say that it's a neoprene seal, which leads me to believe it's the correct seal. I've already ordered this seal, but if for some reason it is not the correct part, where are you guys finding this seal? Thank you

I over heard some Farmall guys talking about that sane thing, about 12-15 yr ago, there is something differant about the 248, and 264 engine, they were haveing troubles getting that then !!

One would think that someone would start manufacturing that seal. I don't know what I'm going to do if I can't find one. I'm thinking about taking the retainers off of a D248 engine and using a felt seal, not the route that I'm wanting to go, but I might not have a choice. I'm just curious if anyone has done this.

It probably won't work. The D248 felt seal retainers had a swirl in the crankshaft to pull oil back into the engine. The D264 cranks don't have this.

D-264 engine had a serial number break during 400 production. After the break crankshafts didn't have the spiral groves at the rear main seal area. The early retainers and seals will work except for the grooves being different. Never tried a rope on a late crankshaft so don't know the results. May not have a choice but to try one if nothing is found. Seems strange that IH used the late seals last and even sold update kits to install them on MD on up. But now there the first dropped.

I know, that is ironic, and very frustrating. I've searched virtually everywhere, and cannot find one. I was hoping someone might know of a different application that uses the same seal. I was also hoping that someone had tried using the older retainers on the newer engine, so that I'm not the guinea pig ha ha.

Not sure what your CIH dealer told you, but you might try an old established long time IH dealer with an experienced partsman. Those guys tend to work miracles.
