856 vs 756 Questions

Got a JD, MF and about to pick-up an old family Ford 3000. Just because I like the tractor, one of these days - an Allis Chalmers WD45.

But for a larger tractor, I'd like to find a 856 or 756. I just like the style, color scheme on these tractors - so at least that's settled.

Would use the tractor for haying, squares maybe, but certainly 4x5 round bales at some point and maybe a discbine - if I hit the lottery....

So which should I go with, an 856 or 756?

I'm leaning towards the 756 - looks like the right size/hp, however.....

From an intended use, parts availability (including engine American vs German engine), mechanical skills required to repair/fix, complexity, fuel consumption and just overall - which would you recommend? 856 or 756?

Any sage advice is much appreciated.

The 756 will be more thrifty with fuel. If that is not important I would go with the 856.

I have a Turbo 756. Love it.11,000 + hrs and still strong...The 310 german is a fantastic engine. The 856 is a bigger tractor, has the good reliable 407 engine.Unfortunatly, both are two of the most expencive to OH if needed.Fortunately,if cared for they are both long lifed engines. Parts are readily available for both. However the German Bosch pump is starting to have some availability issues(pricey, too). The RoosaMaster pump on the 856 is still a common pump. Both are fine outstanding tractors.Either one will give great serviceThere more 865 tractors out there, made from '67 to '71. The 756 diesel was only produced in '67/'68'(the gas model was built till 71). The 826 Diesel replaced the 756 diesel in '70/'71.They were also great tractors(i have one of those too),in the same league as the 756/856.The 826 had the D358 german(big brother to the 310). Now,you have a 3rd choice!Just pick one.......

If your in hills you would appreciate the extra power of the 856 if you plan on pulling a discbine. Both great tractors tho.

If you can find a 856 , that has been well taken care of, including changing of the anti freeze, that would be the way to go.

The 856 hands down. Great tractors. The 756 is a smaller frame tractor than the 856 so lesser parts availability. The 856 has a lot of parts in common with the 12 and 1456. If you were to go to the 66 series you would reduce Oh costs with the wet sleeves versus the dry sleeves in the 56 series.

AH no a 756 is NOT a smaller frame tractor as you can use the gears out of either one and put in the other as long as they are in the s/n break . The 756 looks smaller due to the shorter grill and lower setting dash but the castings are the same . Ya have to get down to the 656 for a smaller FRAME tractor.

If you are thinking disc mower conditioner those take A LOT of ponies. I run a 12 footer and wouldn't run less than 130 horse with it. If you are just talking disc mower I'm sure you can go much less in the power department.

An 856 wheatland was our muscle for field work. We bought it new and later installed a horrible hot box of a cab. The 856 was a completely trouble free machine. The first time it went to the shop was for an engine rebuild when we wore the first one out. We didn't have PTO or three point (wheatland) but I think those items are trouble-free on them. We stepped up to a 1086 when they were a couple of years old. I missed "Big Red" from my first day in the field without it. I loved the comforts of the 1086 but that old 856 had character and was just dying to work. It didn't have a huge fuel tank by today's standards, but I don't recall it using a lot of fuel. For haying I'd think that one would be very easy on diesel.

856 better to go over than under.
I think a 407 & roosa master would be less expensive to tear into as well. 756 is a very nice tractor as well though.
