Well this morning i went out to go move some things with the 606 and she would not fire. been having an intermittent issue with this all summer. First thing i did was pull the coil lead and check spark at the coil, none. I proceeded to follow John T's ignition troubleshooting everything checks out like it should, just i have nothing coming out of the coil. could it be the coil has broken down and the secondary winding is shot? the coil appears to be the original 50 year old coil. am i head to the right conclusion? I plan on Monday picking up a coil and a spare ignition kit

If the terminal connected to the distributor is On OFF ON OFF as it cranks (test light) the coil may be toast. Jim

yeah it was pulsing my power probe test meter light. kinda how it made me think that the coil has completely failed

If the part of my ignition troubleshooting yielded the voltage to the coil is fine and the LV primary output to distributor appears fine, like the points are opening and closing correctly, but theres no HV spark out the top, sure the coil could be bad.

Remove the small LV primary output coil wire that goes to distributor so there's no issue with good or bad points or condenser etc.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Put a small jumper wire on that small coil LV primary output terminal that otherwise goes to distributor,,,,,,,,,,,,,Remove the top HV coil wire out of the distributor cap center (leaving coil end intact) and place it instead within 1/4 inch of tractor steel/frame. With battery voltage on the coils small LV primary input (like when ign is switched on) touch the other end of the jumper wire on the coils output as described above to frame ground and remove it. EACH TIME ITS GROUNDED (jumper to frame) BUT THEN REMOVED there should be a spark from the coils HV output wire to within 1/4 inch from iron frame. Jumping the coils output to ground then removing it is what happens when points are closed but then open which is when the coil should fire.

I think that's in my procedure in different words its like bench testing the coil to see if it can produce a HV spark. Same thing can happen if you use an insulated pencil or stick to manually open the points after they are closed SHOULD MAKE A GOOD COIL FIRE
