Model A Farmall or International

I have a line on a model A tractor. The serial number tag reads Model IA. serial IAA 117032
Can any one decifer what that means?

Thank, peter

That means International A rather than Farmall A. The tractor should have the heavy square front axle, foot operated speed control and an "INTERNATIONAL" name plate on the front.

Somee decals would have been different as well, but that has likely been changed over the years.

The way I have always understood it the I stands for industrial not international. So what it is, is an industrial A which is made heavier for things like Hwy mowing job etc.

Bologna. The Ag tractor is designed to deal with Ag conditions, including reduced soil compaction. Ind tractors are heavier built because they will be abused by neo-operators and X2 loads. Farmers in the Yesterday's Tractor era were also less able to buy heavier tractors. For the most part thousands of "lesser" farm tractors have survived! Jim

Will the regular attachments fit such as a sickle bar mower, moldboard plow or snow plow? May be nice with a belly mount mower.

Thanks for your replies.

Peter.

Yes, they should all fit fine. Not too many attachments rely on the front axle being round ;)

note that as an A model, (assuming it's not a Super), some of the attachments will need the A model mechanical lift levers, etc. or an aftermarket hydraulic plant.

This is Super A, but still "INTERNATIONAL".

Jim, Would be nice to find that mower. Not sure how much luck I would have. The A that I will likely buy, the Industrial, was painted red and
decalled as a standard A then used as a lawn ornament. I choose to use most all our machines for chores, etc. it would be great to have a
sickle bar for this machine, especially a mid mount. I'll see what I can find. I assume they would be a 6' mower? Would be great for mowing
along the driveway and hedgerows. If you or others have knowledge that a standard A mower would fit, I will start my search after I get the
tractor.

Thanks very much for your help, Peter.

On second thought, with my hurneated discs, it maybe best to getting this machine shined up, working and sell it. Then I could buy a Super A that has hydraulics like a Cub. Would be much easier on my parts. Located in the lower Hudson valley of NY if anyone is interested.

Thank again for all your input and help.

Another possibility is to buy this one and a junker Super A, then rob the hydraulics system off the junker. Might be more work than you care to do though.

Super A's are not that uncommon if that is what you are after. In decent shape they sell for more than any plain A does these days though.

There was a highway mower for the A, different than the Super A. It required a functioning pneumatic lift system. They pop up once in a while but usually attached to a complete tractor.

Moving the hydraulic system from a Super A to an A is not a reasonable project. Too much of the tractor is different between the two models. If you want a side mounted sickle mower on an A sized tractor, your best bet is to look for a Super A or later. Along with the highway mower, there was an Ag style mower made for the Super A.

Highway mowers for both tractors were typically 5' cut. The most common original color for the International A was probably red.

I saw your old post. I do have an International A year 1946. I put an International belly mower on it and then a cultivator lift. I mow my acreage with it. Probably a Woods mower could be adapted to it.
