International 444

A friend has a 444 and is having trouble with his lift. He says it will lift the arms up without a load, but it won't lift a load. He says he does not
know where the filter is located. I have not seen the tractor so I won't guess. Do any of you know where to look. Maybe he can change the filter
and see if that might help. Thanks, Tommy

Tom, I just finished up re-working the hydraulics on my 354, which is the same model group as a 444. They have the same base hydraulics system. I'll be happy to talk your friend through where everything is and some things to do. There are 2 filters on that system, and both are internal (unless someone has added an external one at a later date). They are very easy to get to, and both are available as parts.

Let me know if you need further help.

I think the 444 is similar to the 424 and has a separate hydraulic reservoir and control system mounted under the seat separate from the transmission. It only has a suction screen and no other filter. If the lift goes down when the engine is off, or it cycles to stay up when tractor is running, the lift cylinder piston located inside the hydraulic unit needs rework or replacement.

Haas, you are correct, except there is also a screen/filter on the control valve also. it is the larger hex head cap on the front, top right (as you face it) of the hydraulic unit that is under the seat.

BTW, my definition of "internal" is that the suction screen/filter and the control valve screen/filter are both contained in the under-seat hydraulic unit. My bad for not being a wee bit more clear.

That doesn't sound good. I am afraid there is more than a clogged screen going on there. He probably needs to find someone who is familiar with this lift and talk to them--this particular hydraulic system is very touchy and everything has to be set up just right for it to work right.

Thank all of you for the info. I have not talked to him this week, but I will pass this info on when I see him. I had a 454 one time with hydraulic problems. It had an external filter but it also had a small filter about finger size inside the transmission housing. When I found it and cleaned it, I never had any more problems. I hope he will find something simple with it. Thanks, Tommy
