Supply line comes from live pump, goes thru both valves and returns to tank. Lines going to loader controls come out of second valve and are split so one comes from each side of second valve-one to contro bucket ram and the other line or up and down. does anyone know if this is correct plumbing?

This is probably Ok then. These valves were probably put in to tap another hydraulic service into the system. The second valve should detent to allow the loader to get fluid all the time. It is merely going into one loader valve and out the other to return to this valve to return back to the reservoir. Probably only one way on this valve will make the loader work right.

Thank You for the input. So detent is the "neutral" setting when the valve is allowed to go to the middle? All the way forward or backward is closed? I just don't want to deadhead the pump and stop the return flow!

No, a detent will be some means to hold the valve in an actuated position. The flow path when this valve is actuated will be to the loader valves, through them, and back to this valve. Will this valve stay in a position other than neutral by itself?

No-seems to have a spring loading to push either forward or back, but if you let go it (or the springs) push it to a neutral position.

Look for a wire, block, or other external method of holding it in place. Where it's at it could be operated and held with your heel.
