More Than One Gasket?

Hello Again

Well I got the hole fixed in the lower casting neck J-B Weld and a piece of 1 1/2"square aluminum.Put radiator back on tractor new gaskets,Filled with water.Lower water inlet gasket leaks, surface of casting neck pitted not real bad.did not use any gasket cement only grease.Would two gaskets make any difference, Also a little drip from top left bolt on radiator, would thread sealer work there. Thanks in Advance Steve.

2 gaskets won't seal it, neither will grease, you need to used gasket sealer on BOTH sides of the gasket, use a little of it on the threads of the leaking bolt too.

Nebraska Kirk is correct. Grease is not a sealer. I use copper coat on everything, it seldom leaks. With 2 gaskets you can be assured it will leak.

Would not be a significant thing, but I was told by an old professor that grease coatings reduce heat transfer coefficients and reduce heat transfer amounts. I try to avoid grease on such surfaces.

if the gasket isn't need for clearance issues throw the gasket away, make sure both surfaces are clean and dry apply rtv silicone to one half install the other half tighten the bolts and your leak will be gone as the rtv silicone will form into the voids and expands as it cures, let it set about 30 minutes before refilling

While this may work, you run the risk of silicone oozing into the inside of the joint, breaking off, and plugging your cooling system somewhere.

If he already has the gasket, a moderate amount of RTV or Permatex No.2 or Copper or any sealer that will handle the temperature on both sides of the gasket will improve things dramatically.
