Farmall 504 - PTO Driven Gear question

I had to drain my hydraulic oil by removing the covers (plug seized up). While looking around inside I found a very loose gear that the manual calls "PTO Driven Gear". It has no play on the splines but it slides front to rear. See picture.

It looks like there is a bolt, ring, lock washer that aren't tight. I then removed the clutch access cover and found a large 1-1/4 pipe plug.

Is there a bolt behind this pipe plug? Is there a secret to removing the plug? I don't have an 8 point socket this big.

If I remember correct a 1.5 inch 12 point socket will work. If the bolt that retains gear on splines is not loose and no wobble on splines the problem is on back. Back end of that shaft has a bearing and retaining ring in the housing that limits end play. If anything other than a small amount of end play the center housing has to come out. May be able to work a retaining ring on if that's the problem through the tee shaped cover hole or a retaining pin put in the splined coupling if its out or broke. But think it would be difficult to impossible to get the ring over the shaft and in place. Rear bearing could be bad.

Thank you D

Still looking for an 8 point or 12 point socket this big. My jumbo set is 6 point.

There is a definitely no play in the gear when it is seated onto the splines. Luckily no damage has been done to the hydraulic pump gear either. It did machine its own clearance into the access cover though. The tractor has never been split (family bought new in 1965) so I'm puzzled as to why this assembly is so loose. Disaster thwarted I hope....

The pipe plug is a 1-1/2 inch square and I ended up welding up my own socket. It twisted a bit but worked OK. I could not stomach paying 50+ bucks for one.

My issue was the gear retaining bolt. It was completely out with not a thread engaged. I replaced the lock washer and added thread locker. Disaster averted!

Here are pictures for the future searchers of this problem...
