using glow plugs

I was excited to see my tractor books arrive on Friday, ordered from this site. They were sent really quick, bad part was that they sent the wrong service books, ones for 806 and similar. I did get op manual though. Looking through section on starting tractor, said to hold glow plug button for about 30 seconds then to continue holding glow plug button while pressing start button, and continue using glow plugs until smoke clears up. I have run other tractors with glow plugs but did not realize you were supposed keep using the glow plug while starter is operating. Is that unique to IH or common practice with all tractors using glow plugs?

that has always been standard procedure starting these tractors. that is also why they used 2 6 volt batteries in the 60 series tractors. any other tractor included. as soon as u let go of glow plug button the red hot glow is gone, and in cool weather the atomized fuel will be harder to ignite.the old chev 5.7 diesel and 6.2 diesels used 6 volt glow plugs on a relay and cycled on and off for fast heat up. with 12 volt glow plugs it puts a big strain on battery.

I don't know what you find so unusual about that... the diesel pickup engines of the 80's and 90's (and probably some to this day) electronically cycle the glow plugs a few times after startup to smoothen out the idle and cut back on smoke.
