Super M Filter and Oil amount??

8 quarts in the oil pan, The later M's thru the 450 took the short filter, what the NAPA number is. i dont know. I use Baldwins. The early M took the tall filter, because when u shut off the tractor all the oil in filter, drains back to the oil pan. They shorten it up so it didnt have to pump so much oil into the filter , to get oil pressure.

Actually on the M series engines, it's not tall & short like the He's were but big around and smaller around on the later engines. The diesels continued to use the bigger filters.

The change to the smaller filter was due to a switch to a better designed & manufactured filter than the earlier big filters.

The late M to 450 still use the tall filter. The early M uses a tall filter but it is larger in diameter. You must be thinking of the H. The late H uses the short filter.

To clear up a misconception: They are bypass filters. The pump sucks up the oil and pumps it through the oil galleries to the bearings and also to the filter, the oil that is pumped through the filter just drains back into the sump. It is NOT like modern engines where all the oil is first pumped through the filter BEFORE going to all the bearings.

I looked in my parts books and entered the original part number on NAPA's website and it crosses to the NAPA 1125 and Baldwin PT70

NAPA 1125.(WIX#51125) 9 qts will fill it to the upper petcock. My SM has nothing but NAPA filters for 30 years
