sa distributor - dumb question

On a 53 SA I have the IH distirbutor.
Please share thoughts on lubrication.
In the correct position the threaded hole in the distributor shaft housing is down and the opposite drain hole is up.

IIRC, most of the distributor CAPS have vent/drain holes and it would be more important that they are down (to prevent easy water entry than the position of the threaded lube plug in the "stem".

In the correct position the drain hole in the cap is down. It seems the only way to lubricate this contraption is to rotate the distributor so that the threaded hole is up, remove the plug, add oil, and leave it for a while so the excess can drain out. Then reset the timing. There must be a better way.

Grease fitting is installed in the plug hole and the open hole on opposite side is where excess grease comes out. Plug at front , fill the gear cavity at least half way. Under the rotor should be a felt, few drops of oil there. If you want to go all out after years of use, disassemble part of the distributor and lube the weight pins and weight slide points.

So the threaded hole is for a grease fitting. I thought I had read to use oil. That does make it quite a bit easier.

There is an Oilite bushing in the distributor housing. There is no hole to allow grease to get to the distributor shaft through the bushing but rather the oils in the grease will seep through the bushing. When greasing that bushing just give it a shot of grease. The excess will come out the hole opposite where you installed the zerk flushing the old grease out.
