1964. The R8 engine block change was a modification to make room for the 12-volt starter, which was slightly larger diameter than the 6-volt starter.

Having said that, I'm guessing the later 12 volt starters will not fit a Cub prior to 1964?
 
Thanks for the replies. Here's a photo, I hope, of the tractor in 2012.
The engine and transmission survived the fire just fine and have been transferred to another tractor.

Don't know, never tried. May depend on individual variation of the block castings.
