Cub: how much trouble am I in?

Is this supposed to be open & pushing out grease?

it is supposed to be open. grease should not be coming out in that quantity

you may be over full or may be a seal that is bad.

first, check the transmission for full. it may be too full. if it is, open the transmission drain plug (do not remove plug, rather allow some drainage) probably gonna get some water out. let all the water out and then close. then add oil as needed.

2nd. check the oil level on that wheel. it may be too full. if it is, you will have to remove the pan, clean replace and add clean oil

maybe this will help, if not you have a bad seal.

Its supposed to be like that. The final runs with 90wt not grease and it shouldnt be leaking and it does not come from the tranny. If the tranny would be leaking it would be leaking where the diff housing bolts to the tranny so your leak is coming from the final

Hold on.....My CUB 1977 year is spotless. She had very low useage and every tractor person I have shown her to has just drooled how nice of mechanical condition she is in. NOW your drives down there hold 2 qt of gear oil like 85-140 multi oil. I think that is the right number. Easy to check after you remove the drawer bar. Big plug in these if you look and your socket wrench fits right in there. Now leaking from the top tranny axel stuff you should first drain the whole transmission. This covers water problems and old garbage oil. Refill with the same multi oil and if I remember it is just a touch over 2qt again. So to go through your whole rear drives top to bottom is about 6 qt. of oil. Wash everything good and clean and run her around for a few days. no leaks...yea!! If you start seeing oil running down then you have a seal leaking. Depending how old your tractor I have seen seals with real leather and not rubber seal! It is not a big deal on the final cause just one guy can take the whole thing apart with not much trouble, but the axel is a pain to change cause you need to pull the axle itself. I think I have this all correct. Anyone else want to chime in? PS the picture shows how clean my CUB was after I washed off a tiny bit of old dirt with a little gas. The hole in the back with that much crud on your tractor do you have any brakes left? They are binder type with a little drum on the axle. If they are really good you should be able to slam them on and lock er up. Let us know.

The transmission is overfull likely due to condensation and/or overfilling. It leaks past the splash seal and runs down the axle tube and out that hole. Drain it and fill with 3 1/2 [u:a12359a454][b:a12359a454]PINTS[/b:a12359a454][/u:a12359a454] of fresh gear oil.

Also, the transmission FILL PLUG (full level indicator) is in the picture above. It is just to the left of the left-most final drive bolt. Look close.

Remove that small plug (hard to get to) when you are refilling the transmission. When it starts running out there you are full.
