Ive got a Farmall B that I thought had a starter when I bought it 20yrs ago and gave to my DD. She thinks also that it had a starter tho she hasn't drove it in years. I used it a bit plowing and raking but I thought it had a starter, BUT IT DONT. IF they didn't have starters then. When did they get starters?

the first year any of these styled tractors from 1939- 1940 they could be available without a starter.

I've seen early B's with starters and I've seen them without. From what I have been able to determine, the very early ones did not have one unless it was ordered that way. Very early ones also had a torque tube that did not even have a place in the casting to mount a starter. Later, they came with the casting that had the mounting, but the opening was blanked off if it was bought without one. That change was probably made in 1939 or very early '40.

I have a B that was probably made in September or October of '40 and it does have a starter, generator and electrical system. Whether it came from the factory that way or it was installed aftermarket, there is nobody alive anymore to say for sure.

Jim Becker or Gene Bender can probably give more details than I can.

From GUY FAYS book first starter from factory was the A March 18,1940. They did make field conversion early didnt have flywheel machined for ring gear later they did leave with flywheels machined for one. The B probably was probably the same. All blocks did have bosses for gen cause the Bosch system was available for lites. Another triva all camshafts did have lobe for fuel pump. First B FAB 3675 Sept5 1939 first A June 21,1939 no factory steel ever made.

Interesting that on over in the book he indicates housings didn't have a starter opening until serial 54387. Starters before that were special and probably not common. Flywheel and ring gear attachment special for serial 501 to 54387, part number 56618 DA contained a clutch housing, starter pad cover, flywheel with ring gear and 2 bolts. Think you also needed a different fan pulley for a generator before serial 54387.

A number of years ago I saw a B on an auction that was a crank start. I don't believe there was an opening for a starter. I bid on the tractor at the time, but did not get it.

I saw a BN at an auction three years a go. It did not have a starter or a hole for one. It sold for $1500.
