JD #5 mower issue

I was mowing with my jD #5 mower and the sickle stopped moving. The pto shaft going into the gear box was turning but nothing else. Could anyone tell me what probably is wrong and if there is a fix to it. Found out the chain was loose. Tightened it and it worked about 5 minutes. Then the shaft broke on the big roller wheel that turns the pitman stick. The wheel has about 2 inches of the shaft on it. Is the mower worth fixing or should i junk it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

had same thing happen to my #5 a few years back. I had a parts one to swap out. I think #5 is a good mower and you should be able to find used parts or probably a whole parts mower for not too much money.

I replied to your earlier post with a link to the parts catalog, complete with parts breakdowns. You must have missed it? So here it is again.

The "crankshaft" is part # Z8763H, unfortunately NLA form DEERE, so you'd have to find a good used one (If yours is REALLY old, 1937 to 1939, it takes part # Z7681H.)

If you are going to workpon it, having the owner's manual will be of a great help. They are still available from DEERE, or check ebay.

They are worth fixing. Check Ebay and Craigslist and you should readily find parts or parts machines. When you tightened the chain did everything turn freely by hand? Virtually no load on the cutterbar when sitting by the shop. Gear box lubricant level where it should be and no issue of a bad bearing?

I do not know that mower but if it has a gear box hard to say what broke till you open it up and have a look see. Could be as simple as a sheared key way or a stripped out gear

Take it apart and go to someone with a lathe and milling machine. Use a piece of stress proof or fatigue proof shafting and make one.
