Farmall Regular Carburetor Adjustment and Throttle/Mag Level

Hi guys!

Just finishing the restoration on my 1930 Farmall Regular and I am having a hard time getting it to run right. It starts up just fine with only two cranks but for every adjustment of the throttle I need to adjust the choke. At idle the choke needs to be nearly completely close for it to run but if I open the throttle up anywhere between half and full it still needs about half choke and will occasionally backfire and stall.

The carburetor was completely rebuilt by a professional carburetor shop nearby and it is the IH model "R", 3 piece brass carburetor. The only thing I don't know is if the carburetor was adjusted to its factory settings.

Does anyone here know what the factory settings are and which adjustments are which?

The only thing I thought might make a difference is the air hose is not on yet except it ran just fine before the rebuild without it. It does run a bit rough now too at idle which is why I think its more of an adjustment issue than the air hose not being on.

Also, the throttle lever and magneto lever are rusted together. Does anyone have any experience on getting them apart or is there anywhere that makes new ones?

Thanks to all who reply!!

The factory settings on the carb are 2-1/2 turns out on the main fuel screw which is the big knob on the top of the carb. The idle mixture screw is the one on the very bottom and it should be screwed 1-1/2 turns out. These are initial adjustments and can be fine-tuned once the engine is running.

You can get a new throttle/mag rod and tube from either The Fordson House or Rice Equipment.

Thanks! I just went out and adjusted the carb to those settings. It appears that the idle screw was out a bit far so I'll test run it a bit
later when I have more time.

I did notice one other screw on the carb. There is one next to the choke between the choke and manifold that appears to go into the float/bowl
area. I cant seem to figure out what it is and am wondering if this needs to be adjusted. The screw is "T" shaped and I cant turn it by hand.

I will have to look into the tube for the throttle. Last I saw Rice Equipment only had one section of it but I might try calling and see if
Frank has both sections.

Thanks again!!

That "T" screw is just for draining the gas out of the bowl. The only other adjustment screw on the carb is the idle stop screw which is where the tube from the governor attaches to the carb. You just screw that screw in or out until the engine idles at the speed you want.

Alderson's (aldersontractor.com) may have that mag/throttle rod & tube too.

You could even make it yourself if you want. It is just a 1/2" OD tubing with a 3/8" rod going through it. 3/8" rod is easy to get at any steel supply place, they may even have the tubing in stock too. Farm/Home stores like TSC or Orschlens have the 1/2" OD tubing I have noticed.
