H farmall carb question

tell me what I'm overlooking, cleaned the carb on an h that had sit a couple years it has an ihc carb, when parked it ran fine the exhaust manifold got broken, it was a heater manifold I replaced it with a gas manifold, problem is the engine is flooding, went back into the carb 3 times and even lowered the float some ,the only things that will level the engine off is to open the carb drain a little so it can get air into the main jet,the high speed screw is all the way in, the other way to level it off and I know this doesn't sound right but it helps, was to hold my hand over the end of the carb and restrict the air intake then it will run fine, but if I use the choke any at all it will flood worse, the choke is open and the carb doesn't leak while sitting not running, also if anyone has a break done or flow drawing on the ihc carb for and H I would greatly appreciate it if you would post a picture, I know it's something simple but for the moment I've run into a stump

Sounds like one of more of the passage ways is clogged up. If you have a local O'Reilly's auto parts store you can buy a Walker brand carb kit for it and it will have a good break down picture in the instructions. Cost is around $20 or so. I have the instruction sheet here form one I rebuilt not long ago I could scan for you if you would like. Send me an e-mail and I'll send it to you. I even have a rebuilt carb in the trunk of my car off an H

The needle valve and seat are leaking. Might need to replace the set, might get by with just a good cleaning. Don't guess at the float height setting. The IH engineers spent a lot of hours determing the optimum setting. If it worked 70 years ago, it will work now. Also, make sure the float is in tact and does not have a pinhole in it. Another thing, make sure the pin that holds the float in place is where it belongs, and the float can move easily.

+1 on checking the float for holes. I just happened to shake mine when I had it out for the rebuild, It had gas sloshing around inside it. Can't fix them really. Got a new one from Steiner.

Rich, why would you rebuild a carb and then let it ride
around in the trunk of you car? Just seems odd!

gbs, choking it and holding your hand directly over the
choke bore is basically the same. I don't see how they
could produce different lean/rich results.

If you're sure that carb is right, heck, even if you aren't,
check the quality of your spark. It should be blue/white in
color, and as Old says, jump a 1/4 inch gap in open air.

I will have to look at the carb kits I have in hand and see if I can find the right one and the number for it

I rebuilt 2 of these carbs a few years ago. I was working on an Adams road grader that has the H engine in it. So I had them both and never have taken to one back out of the car. Figure it is as safe in the trunk as it is any place else and I do not have a tractor to put it on

(quoted from post at 11:11:29 08/10/15) Good point but you can't put venture upside down in an H carb. Some marvel scheblers you can.

Exactly. Physically, it will not fit. On the other hand, I have opened a couple of H carbs and found the venturi to be totally missing. Probably why they were sold on ebay.

How many time do you have to be told to leave me alone. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I don't care about what you think

Holding you hand over the air intake is not quite the same as using the choke. When using the choke the air is restricted to the carb but the fuel bowl vent is still open to the atmosphere. When you hold your hand over the end you also close off air flow to the fuel bowl vent causing a vacuum in the fuel bowl.
