IH 300 convert to 12V

I installed the Hitachi alternator on our 300 and it seems to work ok. The only thing is that the amp meter stays pegged to the charge side. I measured the volts at the battery and it is 13.9 more or less. Could this be due to the orginal amp meter not being correct for the alternator or is the VR in the alt not working. It fits real nice under the hood. Thank you for all your help.

My H does that for a while, then backs down, I would not worry as long as voltages are correct. My dad always said people worry to much about amperage, his quote "take care of the voltage and the current takes care of itself". I think this is why newer units have voltmeters.

Your reading of 13.9 is good charging voltage. Either your battery is not charged up yet or you have a defective battery that the voltage will not rise to normal levels of about 14.5 volts. I would put a slow charge on until voltage does come up to 14.5 vicinity. If it won't come up with a slow charger it never will with the alternator either. Is the battery gassing, cooking or just a slight bubble.

Several amp gauges could be on the tractor. I have a 30 amp gage on a H with the same alternator. With a good battery it only pegs the gauge after startup until about the count of ten then drops back. If you have the 20 amp gage and a low battery its going to peg.
