M belly pump and power steering

Would anyone know if a belly pump would be compatible with a priority valve and charrlyn torque generator for power steering? I understand pump is disengaged by clutch. Thanks

It would be compatible, but I don't know if it would put out enough pressure to operate power steering, plus you have the inconvenience of loosing power steering every time you step on the clutch. Those belly pumps only put out 700-800 psi. You are much better off getting a GM automotive power steering pump and making a bracket to mount it on the engine and driving it off the alternator belt. My brother put power steering on his M with a Charlyn torque unit and a GM power steering pump off a 1980s pickup. It works like a charm!

Just googled same question and it appears the consenus is yes it would work, but probably affect operation of front loader. For me they both do not need to work at the same time, so if I worked both independently it should work ok. Sound reasonable? And thanks

Kirk,
I did the same with a Case tractor. GM power steering g pump running off the dual water pump pully.
Find a location on the manual steering shaft where you can cut out about 6-7 inches of shaft and still reach some point where you can ridgedly mount the torque generator to something solid.
Wouldn't/couldn't be without it.

(quoted from post at 12:19:01 08/07/15) Kirk, do you recall where your relation mounted the torque genrrator?

Under the hood just in front of the gauges. There is a special bracket made to hold the torque generator and gauges.

Ok, so the unit is concealed, thanks Kirk. I just was not interested in it being exposed. I assume the bracketd can be purchased seperate from
the unit or fab'd. Thanks

That bracket was a bit too pricey for me. I mounted the CharLynn up close to the steering wheel. Made my own bracket.

The torque generator mounts to the center support where the oil psi & temp gauge are mounted. I think there's a special gauge mount that the torque generator bolts to.

As to the gauge/torque converter plate, be prepared to modify it. The instructions I had actually told me to hit the hood with a hammer until the converter (charlynn) would fit. I "restored" my Super M and ordered the gauge/converter plate from Steiner. It did not come close to fitting. Since it already had power steering, I used the old one and hacksawed pieces so that it fit, barely. I replaced the original hood, since it was beat to death.

Well, I inherited this (stem to stern) restored 1951 M from and by my Dad. Pounding the hood is not an option. If that is the case I will fab a plate, hold on to my $65.00 plus shipping and tax, or abort ps. Thanks for the tip. I will try and look for a m with charlynn ps and see what is involved with the bracket. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

I can only imagine what a blessing ps on an m can be. Can get pretty tough steering, especially with all my birhdays, thanks

Sparky shoot me an email if you want the manuals on the char lynn power steering. I have installation, operator and parts manuals scanned on my computer at work.
