Super H Bendix

Hello all,

Sorry for the long post.

Been lurking for a while but now I need help. I have a stage I Super H that I'm bringing back to life. I got it running a few years ago and used it for a while but got busy and let it sit again. I started working on it the other day and got it running but have things to fix. I had the starter rebuilt when I got it running the first time but it sticks fairly often. I remember my dad having the same problem and he changed to an updated bendix and the problem went away. I suspect the rebuilder put an old style bendix in so I want to replace it with the updated style. My question is - Will a bendix made for an H fit a Super H? I find them for an H or HV (and M) but many times Super H isn't listed. If I'm correct, the updated style is a ratchet style, right?

Thank you for your help.

Ron

Or clutch type. The 2 bolt starters are the same. The new style has no big flat wound spring that is used to drive the gear, Jim

AFIK the starter bendix is interchangeable between the H and SH.

HOWEVER......sometimes a new bendix and a worn ring gear can make a sticking/jamming problem worse (it happened to my SH). Not until I installed new ring gear did the starter jamming problem go away.
