M and H question

Does letter M or letter H on the tractors stand for anything. A neighbor told me engineers came up with M for Modern and H is for Handy. These tractors are modern and handy over the old F-20 and F-12/14.so the story goes.

The letters designate the size "M" was the larger and took the place of a F30 . The smaller H took the place of the F 20 . I think that modern and handy were hos ideas .

Probably only a letter for the model designation, just like the A, B, W4, W6, W9, etc. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

The letters do not stand for anything, they are merely designations to differentiate between the different models of tractors.

the W stands for wheeled tractor, as the T stands for tracked tractor, in the crawler versions.

I had heard some time ago that a former IHC executive was supposed to have said M stood for Mighty, H stood for Handy, and the C was named by a IHC executives wife as Cute. But I had also heard Cyrus H. McCormich, CHM. I believe nobody actually knows.

if it does stand for something at least, since we have a ih cub, there wasnt a larger one named wolf, bear, or lion, lol

I think we've all wondered that. If they were A, B, C, D and E it would have made sense. And if there were unused designs for D, E, F, and G, the C should have been and N or later since the C was designed later. And if they were avoiding letter designations from other companies A and B were taken, I think, by 1939. If the letters were an abbreviation "Master" at least early literature would have mentioned it, and it does not. Must have been a marketing wizard to come up with meaningless letter designations. While I like the styling, it was just marketing, no practical value.
