F 20 magneto control rod

We went to a tractor swap meet. I asked a vendor if he had the rod for an F 20 that went over the hood and then down to the mag. He gave me what I thought I wanted. I got the shaft out of the tube and cleaned them up. I painted them. Yesterday, I went to install it and it will not go thru the loop in the hood. The shaft is 3/8 and the tube it slides into is a 1/2" O.D. and the loop in the hood is 7/16.

Did another model of tractor use this type of mag. control rod? Is this not for an F 20?
The loop on the hood is nice and round and so I do not think it is damaged. I need to decide if I want to re engineer this hood mount to accommodate this rod.
Thank you
Steve

You got the correct rod and tube, they all used a 3/8" rod inside of a 1/2" OD tube, the only difference was different tractors used different lengths of rod and tube.

So that must mean that the 3/8" rod must go thru the 7/16 loop. I thought that the larger shaft went into the loop because of the wear pattern on the O.D.
I will look it over again and hope I get it right this time
Thank you
Steve

Well... originally there were 2 of those loops on the hood, does yours still have 2? The tube went through and stopped a couple inches in front of the rear loop, the mag control lever and rod were attached to it. The 3/8" rod continued through the front loop and the lever and rod for the original governor control was attached to it. However many F20s have since been converted to a variable speed governor and the original linkage eliminated. It is hard to say what modifications have been done to your F20 in the intervening 75+ years.

Here's a pic of ours if it's helpful to you. Hopefully the photo will be clear enough to show how the control rods go up through the hood. (I believe the stuff by the governor was a modification by my husband to covert it to variable speed).
