Is this a logical idea? 674 engine swap...

So...here's the problem: my 674's motor is nearing the end of it's useful life. At 13000 hours, it's about time!;) as this is my only loader tractor and I use it practically every day, I've been hesitant to dig into the motor with a rebuild. It's got the D239 diesel

The idea: local MF dealer just got an ancient looking 574 on trade and want less than 2k for it to get it off the lot. It is pretty neat, but doesn't have a ton of hours on it. It's got the c200 gas motor. Would it save me, from either a time or money standpoint, to just buy the 574, yank the motor and put it in my 674? I know that's switching from diesel to gas, so I'd lose some fuel economy, but would it mean the tractor has less downtime? Not sure what to do...I'm expecting my first child so I don't have time to do s full tear down on the current motor.

I would buy it change the loader. It can be done in a day and then you could do the rebuild on the 674 if you still want the 674 for the loader. The tractors are identical for the loader swap. No brackets should be needed. This would be a better option than to convert from diesel to gas on a tractor.

I would also recommend purchasing the 574, and using it till the diesel gets back on its connecting rods. Jim

Put loader on 574 until 674 rebuilt. Put loader back on 674 when done and sell 574 :)

How many hours per year will you put on the tractor? Does the 574 have transmission problems? If it's OK a gas 574 would make a nice easy starting winter tractor, even after the 674 is fixed.

thanks for the input, everybody! I hadn't thought about swapping the loader, but that is a very smart idea.

Also, If the frame is the same on the two tractors, what's the difference between a 574 and 674? They used both the same gas and diesel engines if I'm not mistaken.

The 674 is a bigger tractor than the 574 and the engine in the 574 is a D206. Not sure about the gas version. So the loader mounts may not
fit so I would research that first.

Very little difference between the two. As has been posted they both use the same size diesel engine, D-239. The 674 replaced the 574 and no longer had a gasoline engine available.

574 uses D239 same as 674.

474 used the D206.
