Just bought a IH474. There is no dipstick to check the hydraulic fluid level. I couldn't find a plug on the side of the housing. I downloaded a user manual and didn't find it there either. (I did find out how to refill it.)

I removed the drain plug and I found metal chips as I expected. Now I have to split it and repair the tranny before I can use it.

Are you sure it isn't a 464 ?Hydraulic dipstick is behind your left heel. fill plug behind the seatback.

Hi, I believe the difference between 464 and 474 is the engine. The 464 has a 3 cyl D-179 and the 474 has a 4 cyl D-206. Both are
German Diesels. In Canada the 474 was rare as most farmers bought the larger 574 with D-239 engine that they could turn up the
inject pump to same as 674.

Hi, I am guessing the metal chips are probably from the parking brake band or drum. Does the parking brake work?
An old trick is get a magnet that can be attached to the drain plug and it will collect the metal chips. Also change the hydraulic
filter. The CaseIH part number for transmission dipstick is 528054R5. The part maybe available from this site otherwise google
the part number and many sources will appear. Most parts are common for 454/464/474/574/674 and many others, except for specific
engine parts.

Forgot to answer the first part of your post. The nameplate above the left foot plate that has the serial has "474" imprinted.
