convert ihc 300 to 12volt

I purchased a NAPA Resistor ICR13 for my 6v coil to use 12V. My question how to you measure the valtage at the resistor? I connected the wire coming from the ign sw to one side of the resistor and the other side I ran to the coil. Both sides measure 12 volts to ground. Should I be measuring across the terminals somehow

Voltage will be dropped across the resistor only with the ignition switch "ON" and the breaker points CLOSED.

Resistors don't resist much when not under an electrical load. Measure the resistance of the device with the ohm meter across the device with one end disconnected. about 2 to 3 ohms is normal. Measuring the voltage when it is running will require an analog meter (needle) not digital, unless it is expensive. If the Ohms are OK, ignore it. Jim

I've never tried to measure the voltage with it running. Will an analog volt meter really respond to the short time the points are closed?

(quoted from post at 09:45:27 08/02/15) I've never tried to measure the voltage with it running. Will an analog volt meter really respond to the short time the points are closed?

An analog meter will work because the needle cannot respond quick enough to show the different voltages. (A digital meter will not give a steady reading without a capacitor to dampen the voltage swings.) You will get the average voltage instead.

It will not give you the results you are looking for because if the points are closed half the time and the two voltages are 12 volts with points open and 6 volts with points closed, the meter will read about 9 volts. You need to read the voltage with the engine off and points closed. You should see battery voltage on the ignition switch side of the coil zero voltage on the distributor side of the coil. The voltage between the resistor and the ignition coil should be somewhat close to half battery voltage.
