Is it worth rebuilding a IH 464?

We have a IH 464 used mostly for operating a loader and a bush hog. It gave up the ghost this winter with a bang. The mechanic looked at it and won't even start taking it apart til we find a new engine block. We found one in Ohio for $1500. Probably $500 to ship it, $1000 for the rebuild kit, who knows what the crank is going to look like, and then the labor to do the work. I'm thinking its time to find another tractor, with 45hp tractors selling in the $4000 range in this vintage. Any thoughts?

If you need its functionality to keep things operational on the property, buy a different solution to the problem, and part it out. It might be in demand as a source to
keep others operational. Jim

compare the approximate cost to rebuild vs. the cost of a decent used loader tractor of similar HP. that makes the decision for you.

One thing about rebuilding and investing in the one you have. You know the rest of the tractor (transmission, frame, steering, etc), so other "hidden" surprises in buying a different one are not in play.
