Looking to Buy Farmall 656, What Should I Look For?

I recently found a 1965 Farmall 656 Diesel on Craigslist for $5000. I went to see it today with my father and met the current owner. The clutch and TA were replaced professionally two years ago. The current owner used it to pull for about a year. The tractor drives nice and sounds good as far as I can tell. The owner did mention that he thought the engine would be needing rings replaced on account of the occasional blowback of smoke. The fast hitch appears to work fine and the PTO has been used consistently for grinding the last year. Is this a good deal and how big of a repair will ring replacement be? Any general advice/information in regards to this tractor would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Peter Markel

It will probably need sleeves and pistons. Remember the old gal is 50. 656 is a good tractor. If you get it put it on a load out in the field. IH diesels are to work and not to idle around,

Go check the parts area of this site. I did and you have from $420 or so up to $800 plus

Yes, I see the in-frame engine overhaul kit is about $550. How difficult is the overhaul?

Not terribly difficult. I did mine about 25 years ago. Only difficulty was installing the dry sleeves. I apparently cracked one, and the first time I put it to work (grinding feed) one sleeve disintegrated and wound up in the oil pan in very small pieces!
