crank case oil for Super A

So the manual recommends SAE30 for over 80F, and SAE20 between 32 and 80.

In my area, most the the time we are in that 32 to 80 range, though SAE20 oil is a lot harder to find than SAE30.

What do you guys use? 30wt seems to be popular when I google farmall oils.

I live in Missouri and I use 20W50 in all my machines. If you live say north of me you could use a 15W-40 or a 10W-40 and be just fine

I live in the north east and I use SAE 30 wt. all the time. No problems at all. I use it in multiple tractors. In one old tractor a 1931 I use 30 wt. non detergent that is somewhat hard to find, but in our area the detergents oils are easy to find.

So does anyone actually use SAE20?

I intend to run the tractor here in Canada from about April to about October. Temperature range of about 50 degrees F to about 93 degrees F.

What about 10W30 automotive? Or with these temperatures am I ok with straight 30 weight?

The tractor can't tell the difference between single grade and multi grade oils. Modern oils are a lot better than what was available, hence stipulated in the original manuals. Since the old Farmalls did very well with poor oil (slow speed, giant bearings) they do even better with modern oils.

Detergent oil keeps sludge suspended but won't actually clean an engine. I always put detergent oil in old engines and have never had a problem with the practice. The worst is a 1939 M which, when I went to change the oil for the first time, nothing came out when I pulled the drain plug. I was alarmed I may have been running it dry, but after poking a screwdriver in the hole, the sludge broke loose and oil started coming out. After owning it twenty years or so, I've never pulled the pan or rocker arm cover. It carries good oil pressure and does not smoke. I always have put detergent oil in it.

OK, so no issues with modern detergent oils.

So should I use 10W30, 10W20, or SAE30 based on my temperature range in my area?

IH specified 10 through 30 weight depending on expected ambient temperature. Maybe 10W30 gives the best coverage across the board?

For gear oil, instead of the SAE90 listed in the manual, I'm planning to use 80W90, which is readily available where I am.

15/40 fleet diesel oil.Used in all of my 15 tractors,combines,trucks,ATVs,motorcycles,lawnmowers.............
