Alternator wiring ?

Picked up a Hitachi alternator 14231 used in the past on H,SH. Latest one is a 14231A that the supplier said would replace the one without the A. My question is about the single terminal the previous Hitachi alternators used didn't have. Is it needed or not needed when wiring unit? Picture of the extra terminal one.

That extra terminal is a "stator voltage" connection. It taps AC voltage off one of the stator windings to drive a an electronic tachometer.

For your application simply leave the terminal unconnected!

Great question. I searched for info on the web and found nothing. The key is to determine the application and look at the diagram for that app. Parts companies go only one way on the issue. A scrap yard might have a listing of the app in the interchange manuals. Another way is to ground the alts frame and attach a voltage source to the big B terminal. then measure the unknown terminal for ground, or hot, or (i have seen info on marine applications of a tachometer hookup. (I think it is a separate ground, as many diagrams have a ground attached to the alt other than the frame. Looking inside with a hand lens might also shed "light" on it. Jim

I see Bob M answered it for you. I went and looked at mine and I left it alone and it works just fine.
