53 Super A rebuild

Since my last post I have accuired a good 113 block and head for my 53 Super A. The destruction is complete, we have completely dissassembled the tractor, broken down into workable sections, the process a cleaning and determining what needs to be replaced prior to re-assembly. The sleeves have been replaced in the new block along with new main bearings and rear main seal. Rod bearings will be in tomorrow, then we will install the pistons and rings. Next comes the front seal and the crank pulley. Both the pulleys that I have are fitted with ready sleeves, going to check with NAPA tomorrow and see if they can get me a new one. Will be purchasing a new clutch and pressure plate, then get the engine and front end re-united along with the Torque tube and transmission. I have some issues with the final seals, mostly the light side final. Getting those ordered today along with a final drive gasket set for both sides. Once these main pieces are reassembled, we will be prepping the ole girl for paint.

Yup. Looks like a basket case, but there's some good looking parts in the basket. ;) I'd like to see the final pics as well.

Is this going to go back to work when you're done, or more for show?

I'm almost jealous. I'd like to be doing to mine what you're doing to yours, but I'm still using mine every couple days and can't seem to spare more than a few minutes a day to tinker with such stuff. I keep telling the better half/SWMBO that I need another SA so I can properly fix the first one for her. I think she's starting to soften. Now about that machine shed to house them all...

She's going back to work, dont have a need for a show tractor, but I do need a reliable one. Tractor was originally purchased for Food plot managment on our deer lease, started out a simple fix and put to work but turned into more a preservation than restoration LOL. I think it will be a good machine when we're finished, at least we'll know that everythings been looked over and checked out.

Good job !!!
1. Now you will "know what you have" as far as the engine is concerned.
2. Much more reliable & dependable, no cooling issues now.
3. Possibly a few new "ponies" compared to the worn original engine.
4. Any further "cosmetics" can be dealt with in the future as you wish.

There is a ton of work there, but I would say you have a good handle on it.

While you are into it, replace the two core plugs (freeze plugs) on the back of the block. At least replace the left one as it may rust out from the inside if the cooling system has not been well maintained.

Got the differintial seals removed last night, I did notice that they were diffrent colors, dont think there was any diffrence in the way they were made, just diffrent seal manufacturers maybe? Looking for the transmission input shaft seal and gasket kit now. Hopefully we will get the pistons and rings along with rod bearings installed tonight then we can close up the top end and move on to reassembling the front end.

Got alittle work done on the tractor this week, Got the pistons and rings installed. Man honing all them wrist pin bushings was a pain, but they turned out real good. Got the differential seals installed along with all my transmission gaskets, except the input seal, still waiting on that one to show up. Inspected the transmission gears, everything seems to be ok, i did drive the tractor before we started tearing it down, and didnt hear any odd noises. Planning on tackling the final drives tonight, hopefully by Monday I'll have the rear end some what back together.
