544 float level x 3

Pete 23 you were correct I had installed the venturi upside down. Sadly my idle is not quite so smooth now, but the engine goes to high speed with no hesitation. My borrowed I&T book shows a retainer, item 30, in the drawing which appears to go at the base of the venturi. It was not there when I disassembled the carb, perhaps I should see if it's available from my dealer. Thanks to all for their help. Sonny

About all I can tell you about needing that retainer is, if the venturi has any looseness when carb is together, it would be a good idea to have it . If it is tight I would not worry about it. Since the idle circuit is above venturi, maybe you can get your finger in the throat when running and try moving the venturi to see if it changes idle. I doubt it will. I would think just a thin steel gasket would do the job if you can find something like that. I see it priced in Messicks and wow.
