766 leaking antifreeze in oil

Hi,
My uncle told me the other day the 766 is leaking coolant into oil so he can't run it. The head gasket did have to be replaced recently because it blew a plume of black smoke out of the exhaust and it began allowing coolant in the oil then after the head gasket was replaced it ran fine for awhile then as of late it's right back to it. I was talking to my neighbor who is a new holland mechanic and his assumption is a warped head and/or scoring and pitting inside the sleeves so a rebuild kit would probably be the best bet. If the engine were need an overhaul what would the ball park figure be for a rebuild on a D360 be after parts and labor are factored in or let's figure he buys another head for a D360 how much are they? It's my guess while the engine is torn apart other things need to be looked at as well considering the engine hasn't been gone through since 1980 when it had a complete overhaul after the first owners trashed the engine due to a lack of maintenance. If the repairs are worth more than the tractor I would certainly like to buy it and have it overhauled myself. Thanks for any help! -Neil

Pull the pan pressure up the rad if coolant is coming from inside the sleeves you can almost be sure its cavitation erosion if its running down the outside of the sleeve it might be just o rings. Unless its been run hot it will not be the head. As for a price to overhaul you can figure $1000 a hole to do a good job and that's doing it yourself.

Cousin had a 1466 break a crank about tens years
ago, tractor otherwise in good condition. His tractor
mechanic found a used engine for $2500.00

Those 360 have problems with coolant where it's not supposed to be. They are also expensive to repair. I got tired fooling with mine and put a turbo 414 in it. It is now a real good tractor. They are a little under powered for their size anyway. According to the Nebraska test they aren't much lighter than a 1066. Engine was an easy switch. My engine came from a 915 combine.

Just did a 766 D a couple tears ago. Right at 6500. Couldn't get the rings to seat so that cost another 1000. If I had it to do over, would have looked for a decent 436, fixed it up and put it in. Would have been a lot cheaper. D360 is a costly engine!
