Starter City

So I am still trying to get her out of the garage.

I managed to cure my gov. issue on Saturday. I tried to jump the tractor and the starter solenoid would click but no response from the starter. I remembered hearing it making funny sounds while trying to get it started before. But at least it was making noises. It would work and then I would try to start again and it would just make a spinning sound. So I would try again.

Sunday I took out the starter and the teeth are all worn down, there is no spring response and the teeth cog just spins freely on the post. So I hooked it up to the battery and jumper cables and I could here the solenoid clicking but nothing was happening in the starter. Crickets.

I am thinking about having it rebuilt locally for 125.00-150.00. 232.00 plus a core charge for new seems a little steep and I would like to give the local guy the business. However, I have read here that some people don't rebuilt it right whether it be with the shims or the teeth they use.

What are the reviews of having it rebuilt verses just buying a new one and installing it?

What tractor are we working on? A good local rebuilder will make you a better starter than you can buy 'new'. These days most
"new" starters for old tractors are rebuilds anyway.Give your local rebuilder/neighbor the business. Help him to stay in
business.

They want the core to make another "new" one. Go to the local guy. He'll fix it if he doesn't get it right the first time, but they are pretty basic starters.

It seemed pretty basic while I had it on the bench. Heavy too. I was surprised to be honest.

I was thinking about getting a rebuild kit but I would rather spend the money for a professional than do it myself only to do it again. And again. :D

A good cleaning with new brushes cleaning the commutator and new drive with good bushing and bearing will last a long time.

My IH 140 starter switch stuck (due to corrosion in the switch) and my starter kept turning even after I turned the key off. Smoked my starter before I could get the starter wire disconnected. Local starter/Alt shop rebuilt it for $130 (only took 4 days). They do excellent work. Also bought a new 4 pos switch, but this time it's US made. Starter is almost 50 yrs old so I can't complain. The old ones were heavy duty.

If you get a new starter it will be from China. It will most likely have metric bolts and the electrical components are usually lighter than the the original Delco Remy. If you still have an original Delco Remy you are way better off repairing it rather than replacing it with a new one.

Good call on the Chinese stuff. Anyway, I dropped off the starter on Tuesday morning and got a call this afternoon. (Wednesday) not bad for a turn around. I'll pick it up on Friday and let everyone know how I made out.

Thanks.

In case anyone is in my local area and wants to know. I did have the starter rebuilt and it was $ 135.00. Came to $ 143.44 with tax. Not bad. They put a new starter solenoid on it too.
