450 distributor

I am wanting to replace a worn out distributor on my 450. I noticed there are quite a few available. Are they all the same? My casting number is 353898R11. Are the springs and flyweights the same also? I bought this tractor late last fall in a non running condition and yesterday tried to start it for the first time. It started right up and idled very nicely. After a short time it backfired and died. Today I looked into it and my distributor is shot. I cant believe it even started. This has been one of those that the more you work on it the more you work on it.

About all have the number you posted. If its a gas the same distributor internals will be one starting with a N on the round base where the mounting claps go. Also the year and month following the N. Month will be a letter. The 450 gas distributor came with 25 total crankshaft degrees advance. If you can't find one a 300 or 350 or one changed over for fire crater pistons on other tractors with 22 degrees would work.

I have been finding many of Delco & IHC. distributors the advance & springs are worn & lets it advance 35-55 deg. Checked a new IHC. China replacement it had 16 deg. total advance. Mark your front pulley in degrees so you can dial it in.

I agree with Mr.Slater make sure your total advance is correct or you will not be able to obtain maximum horse power .

No you are okay with the original. What is worn in the distributor? If the distributor shaft weight pins and weights are okay and the cam not loose on the top of the distributor shaft you can replace most of the other parts for less than a new distributor. Not cheep though.

When I put the engine on TDC #1 I noticed that the rotor on the distributor was closer to #3 than TDC #1. When I pulled the plate the points set on I noticed the springs were both broke and one had been ground to nothing. The pins felt sloppy also. I really wouldn't mind rebuilding it but I just figured parts aren't too easy to get. That and I have never had one apart. I do have a manual though. I had it running long enough to see oil pressure on the gauge and that is about it. I did look at the drive gear and it seemed to be in good shape. The teeth didn't seem worn out.

I just took it apart and it looked better all together. The pins on the shaft fit loose that hold on the weights. The stop on the plate attached to the shaft is oblong and worn. One weight in particular has an oblong hole. The cam doesn't look bad but I would think it would have to be worn at this point. I don't have a good one to compare it to. I guess I am going to see what all is available.

Unless case IH has changed there pricing from a few years ago you won't believe the price of what you need, if its still available. If I remember correct the rotor shaft was $180 plus. Think I told a poster that goes by CNKS about a place once that had new shafts left for about half the dealer price. Can't remember the place now or if they still have any. I used to get the springs from IH for less than 20 and weights less than 50. last I checked they had doubled or tripled. Now I look for used distributors in pretty good condition with a 25 degree or less advance if needed. If more advance is wanted the limit hole can be enlarged. Unless things changed the original 400, 450 gas springs are no longer available. Was 2 sets to get, one for a 350 gas distributor a little stiffer than original and another set a little less stiff, can't remember the liter set. Could look and see.

Done a little checking. Dealers probably won't be furnishing parts for the distributors much longer because they won't be selling any. 22 degree shaft $480, weight $91, springs $43 or $70 depending on stiff or less stiff.
Time consuming work but if you can make or have someone make oversize pins to fit after drilling the weight holes they can be installed in the shaft. Make shaft hole tight then spot weld the bottom side is what I do. Oversized advance limit holes can be closed up or a new hole made 180 degrees from the other one. As you can tell I'm out of date, been several years since I repaired them pretty often.

I called the local dealer today and everything but the weights is NLA. I might call and try my luck at a junkyard. I hope I don't get the same thing I've already got though.
