Super A flywheel access port (?)

On my tractor, there is a small sheetmetal cover you can remove that covers an oval hole in the bottom of the drivetrain casting - you can see the flywheel assembly through it. What is the purpose of this port?

As an aside, when I opened mine, that cavity was filled with junk, looks like at some point since 1952, and animal made a nest in there. Someone must have once left the cover off for a while or something? The next material was lightly soaked in oil, not saturated, but oily. there was bits of cloth, grass, wood chips, fibreglass insulation, all sorts of things. I pulled out as much as I could through that port.

Any issue pulling the front sheet metal guard off the bottom end of the housing to get at the rest? Or will that require me to have gaskets or fluids on hand? I don't have the shop manual yet, it's on its way.

That hole is to get at the grease fitting on the throw-out sleeve. Pull the bottom cover & clean it out. No oil in there.

No problem in removing that plate. No gaskets involved. Oil in there is typical, as engine rear main seals usually leak some. Some a lot more than others.

The oval hole at the bottom is to access the clutch release bearing grease fitting, which probably hasn't seen a grease gun in years. Give it a few shots, and check things for obvious wear (release bearing wear, bearing fork wear, pressure plate finger wear, clutch disk thickness) while you're in there. A can of brake cleaner can be helpful.

If the crankshaft pulley doesn't have a timing mark, you may find the timing mark through the access hole.

Hey you guys you cant grease the throw-out bearing thru that hole you need to remove the snap-out plate on the side of the bell housing to grease that fitting.

gotta clean em regularly.
You can't keep critters out of there.
There is another opening at the back of the torque tube where they can get in.

Get out your airline and goggles and blow that stuff out...the whole tube.
Critter pee is like battery acid, amazing damage it can do.

And like said, if that's the first time you've had that cover off and you don't have a pulley pointer, check your timing, it probably needs it.

I have to check the timing anyhow when I rebuild the distributor next week.

What other hole at the back of the torque tube are you talking about? Can I seal it?
