Where have I been

I bought a F-20 a few years ago and see the hand brake lever for the right brake is a piece flat iron bolted to the brake rod with a U-clamp. Today looked at a F-20 setting in a scrapyard and it had no hand brake for the right brake. I thought when I was young dad's F-20 had hand brakes on both sides and the right and left brake lever looked the same. Was I dreaming about dads F-20 having a brake on both sides.

It could have had one on each side. Tractors from that era have had plenty of opportunities to be farmer engineered several times . Factory option I believe

kub6040 is right.After 80+ years,lots of things get changed/added/removed.Brake levers/pedals are one such thing

F20's and Regulars only came with 1 hand brake. The 2nd one was optional and often added. Just like foot brakes were a later option as well.

That is interesting. The "Regular" I just got has the left brake lever and a flat bar home made lever on the right. It kind of irritated me but then I remember we had a lever hanging on the shop wall & barn wall all of my life just most likely a original brake lever but since cleaning up the farm, it is missing either put away somewhere or mixed in with 3- hay wagons full of scrap metal.

If it is ever found again maybe it would be a good replacement for the home made one but now it doesn't seem as important. Sooner or later ever small detail is going to come up on this Forum. It helps put all the pieces together after all these years. cleddy

yessir. The left side was the one they chose to provide. I am sure there was a reason for it being the left side.

(quoted from post at 22:04:52 07/25/15) Oh that is just great. Stopping a tractor with ONE brake on ONE wheel??!! Gives me a shiver!

Don't forget, top gear is around 4 mph factory. The only time I use the brakes on my f-20 is to load on the trailer or park on a hill

Going up or down steel ramps with steel wheels with only 1 hand brake was definitely a learning curve process. Only took once !!
1. added a rh brake lever
( not enough hands when backing off a trailer )
2. Used conveyor belting to cover ramps & trailer
( worth every penny)
3. When loading or unloading, let it warm up & slow to idle.
Place into low gear, commit yourself to let out the clutch & don't stop until you are completely off, or completely on the trailer.
4. A gear driven electric winch is worth even more than used conveyor belting. Life is good !!!

Winching (while still a bit hazardous) is MUCH better than driving a steel wheel tractor on or off any trailer.
