(HELP) Farmall MD Clutch Trouble

Hello Everyone,

Just purchased a MD Farmall and believe something is wrong with the clutch. We pull started it and when it started when pushing the clutch
in the tractor kept going idled it down and the gears ground but got it into neutral. When pushing in the clutch to shift gears all it does
is grind the gears and won't go into gear. I assume something is wrong like pressure plate? Any other ideas? Any other possibles besides something wrong with the clutch?

Did you see the earlier response? Did you adjust the clutch? If there is too much pedal free play the clutch won't release. And the throwout bearing fork may be broken or bent. Pull the Liftall and have a look. The clutch can be removed without splitting the tractor, by the way.

So, did you buy it like that?, If it's been setting for a while the disc is probably stuck.

The driven disk (friction disk) is likely rusted or gummed to the flywheel, as noted by Andy. If it will not free up driving it around in 4th with the clutch pedal blocked down, it will need to be taken apart (removing the Liftall pump, and accessing the clutch through the bottom. Jim

It might be that the adjustments are similar to the "H". If so, there's probably two very simple adjustments, that can make all the difference; adjust the length of clutch rod, that is, by undoing one end, and threading / or / unthreading the rod. Second, and this adjustment is to be done first, is the clearance or the gap between the ends of the 3 fingers of the pressure plate, and the throwout bearing. IN the case of the H", the gap is 3/16", and very simple to adjust, in place. IHC Clutch Adjustment Manual GSS-1095 specifies the same gap, 3/16". for the M's. Might be it is the same 3/16" for the MD. If so, make your self some sort of tool to measure this gap, loosen the locknut, adjust the bolt length, using the tool, and tighten the locknut. Three times. Very simple to do on the "H", hopefully it is on the MD too. Preobably need to get yourself a owner's manual, it will probably explain better than I. Do these adjustments before you decide to repace anything. Very simple.
