Noisy PTO Shaft Farmall H

I have a 1941 Farmall H. I pulled the out the PTO to replace the seal. I didn't see how you could replace the seal without pulling the shaft like people say. I pulled the whole shaft out to replace the seal. I put the new seals in. I put the shaft back in. It seemed to go right back in and I can turn the PTO from the outside. But then when I tighten up the faceplate bolts, I can't turn the PTO at all engaged or disengaged. With the tractor running it just makes grinding noises when I let the clutch out. I've loosened it and tried to put it back in several times. It seems to line up and go right in. Thanks for any tips.

You have an early style PTO assembly. The later ones have a longer shaft sticking out of the rear frame and have a removable seal retainer. Your style is also harder to reinstall because they have less sticking out the back.

You are not getting the PTO shaft into the bushing on the transmission countershaft. You can't turn the shaft after tightening the bolts because it is binding up on the outside of the countershaft.

It is a bit tricky to get the shaft back in place. When you get it almost all the way into the rear frame you need to wiggle it around to find the countershaft with the front of the PTO shaft. I like to get it so I have the PTO shaft directly on top of the end of the countershaft and the slowly pull to PTO back until the front of the shaft starts to drop. It takes a bit of practice to only let the shaft drop to the center of the countershaft before pushing it forward into the bushing. the only other option is to remove the deck off the the transmission and rear end.

You can slide a piece of pipe over the end of the pto to give you a little more control while installing.

I took the PTO out of my 55,000 serial number M, to get all the old grease out of the case, it took about 2 1//2 hours of trying, i finally got it,have patience, you will know when u make the connection.
