Farmall M with Detroit

Just picked up this M with the Detroit conversion. Just curious to how many are out there? Looks to be an original time period correct install. Has the GM decal on the grill. It looks to me that the hood is not the one used with the conversion. Also the muffler is under the hood. Other pictures I see they are not. Any experts see anything else wrong or not correct about the conversion?
Thanks

Kyle, I can't answer to how rare they are, but I'm certain they are a long way from common.

I imagine you don't go to IH for engine parts, but to a DD outfit, IF they even still carry parts for it. What specific engine is it?

The 2-71 would displace only 142 cubic inches, but because it is a 2 stroke it should be more or less equal to 284 cubic inches. Original M engine displaced 248 cubic inches.

Rusty, it was explained to me many years ago, just because it's a 2 cycle you cant double it, i think it's like a 1.75, but anyway it should haul the mail !

Detroit diesels are good engines, but you have to keep them wound tight to get any performance out of them. Truckers used to say that you should slam your fingers in the door when you get in the truck, then drive the it like your mad at it. So, do the same thing with your tractor. Bark your shin on the drawbar while your getting on it, then you'll be in the right frame of mind to run it.

Think the model 2055 2-71 used in M kits back then were 40 some HP and set for 1800 max continuous RPM.

Yes, keep them wound up. I had a motor patrol several years ago with a 4-71 and idled it a couple of hours during an emergency. Cracked a head. It did not have all the water diffusers in place when I tore it down, but I've had others tell me they like to run on the governor and I believe it.

Yes they can be made to make 68 HP but don't think that wasn't how they were delivered to put in a M. 44 continuous HP.

(quoted from post at 16:20:05 07/10/15) I just googled a 2-71, they claim it's 68 horsepower, that should pull pretty well if you can stand the sound of it!

I like the sound of an 8 cylinder Detroit. The 6 cylinder Detroits don't sound too bad, and even the 4 cylinder version is tolerable for a little while, but that 2 cylinder Detroit just sounds way too much like a 2 cylinder John Deere B, and not a healthy B either.
