Farmall H Crankshaft rear oil seal retainer

As mentioned in other posts, I'm in the process of a complete overhaul of my '46 H (engine and everything). Last night I took the rear oil seal retainer off of the block and think I can see why it was leaking (see pic).

Looking at it from the top, it is obviously not straight like it should be...

Any ideas on how it would get like this? Maybe over-tightened? I'm surprised that it is made of Aluminum (or some other non-ferrous metal) and not cast iron. There are also quite a few stress cracks as you can see in the first picture.

I also see wear on the outside of the retainer.

I know that replacement parts are available... I see that Bates has some. I'm just curious as to how this might have happened in the first place, and how best to keep it from happening again.

thanks in advance!

You have it right with over tightening, trying to make it stop leaking. I beat on many of them over the years straightening them out somewhat. Bolted them together and worked them over with files and sand paper. A belt sander works up to a point. The good news is, with todays multiple types of gasket sealers, you can fill in some really bad gaps and make them work. We did not have that much choice 50 years ago.

Thanks for the advice. The pictures dont show it too well, but the stress cracks are pretty bad. I was searching around and the top part that I need is pretty inexpensive. I think I'll end up just getting a new one.
