recently bought a 47 M farmall. oil gauge background is so dark that i cannot read the gauge. is there a way to improve or do i need to
replace the gauge?

I've never come across a 'dark' gauge, regardless of what brand tractor, that could be fixed, if even possible, for less than the cost of a good new gauge. If it was truly unique, perhaps one of only 2 left on the planet, then you might have a case to do whatever necessary, but a standard 2" oil pressure gauge? Pick an OEM replacement, or a cheap import; either will give you a reasonable indication of whether there is pressure or not.

If you can see the needle you don't really need to know the pressure. Original gauge had no numbers. But new gauges are cheap.

If you are determined enough, the glass lens can be removed, and then the legend plate can be wiggled out, painted white or whatever color works for you, and then paint the indicator hand in a contrasting color. Put it all back together and now you have a gauge that is easy to read. It takes time and a whole lot of patience. A better idea is to just vidit your local Case-IH dealer and get a new gauge. It will not have the original, correct appearance, but it will fit, and it will work.
