went to mow with the 49 cub. started the tractor and let it idle, amp gauge showed about 5 amp charge. as soon as i increased the throttle, amp gauge swung to about 10 amp discharge, turned the lights on and got a 15 amp discharge. shut it off, polarized the genny and restarted. charging at idle but as soon as rpm increase-goes to discharge. grounding the field gives about 15 amp charge. bad voltage regulator? the v-reg is about 4 years old, came from i-h.

Kind of sounds like it is the problem. Do you recall where your IH regulator was made? I see Brillman's offer a USA made regulator.

If it charges good all the time (should still increase with RPM) with a grounded Field, but it does but NOT when using the VR normally, the VR is bad or isn't well grounded or mis adjusted. Insure a good VR ground before you spend any bucks.

i'll check the vr ground and make sure its good. kinda struck me as odd that it discharged that much. about 10 amps . with the tractor off and the lights on , it normally shows about a 5 amp draw.

VRs are a racket. They cost a bundle and I haven't bought a good one in years. I spent lotsa bucks rebuilding a generator and then going through several regulators before I finally got a cheap alternator. I have one more thing on the farm with a generator and regulator. When that goes I'm not even trying to find one. It's the original from 1958 so it will likely outlast me, anyway.

When you get a new one make sure you have the # of the gen so they can match the correct reg for that gen Car Quest has USA regs
