seems like every one i see has the front of the block broken where it bolts on to bolster. or the bolster is broken.....thought i had
agood one and went to take off bolster and when i unbolted bottom left bolt a chunck of the block fell off..man if i put it back on by
hand you cant even see the crack...the hole bottom corner of block just fell off that is depressing.......what causes so many broken
blocks....also can it be fixed or trash it.....i will try to get pic.....thanks always ......dewy

Honestly,I have never seen one broken there.I would say that is from abuse. Someone slamming the front into ditches, etc. However,I have seen a couple of torque tubes broke from a front end loader

Hi, the C & SC should have had frame rails like the larger Farmalls. My Dad broke the front of the engine block on his SC while mowing with NF and a ground hog tunnel collapsed about 3 ft away from main hole.

A large chunk of the left side of the engine block flange, where it mates with the transmission, was cracked off on my Super A. I didn't know about it until some paint came off and the brazed repair became visible. The original owner is dead and neither of the sons remember any thing about it. It's been there a long time without causing any trouble. This tractor has the cat-iron front axel. With the steel axel, maybe whatever broke the block would have bent the axel instead.

I suppose you are all wondering about my cat-iron front axel. Do not confuse "cat-iron" with a misspelling of the more common term "cast-iron". Cat-iron axels are quite rare; IH only made about 30 of them before the government confiscated all IH"s cat-iron technology and commandeered the entire civilian supply of the metal. The military had exclusive use of it for high-performance armored vehicles until the late 1960's. Then, environmental necessity put it back in the civilian market for use in automotive cat-alytic convertors. Not many people know this story, but it all started with IH in the 1940's. With tractor axels. And I've got one. And it broke my engine.

The C is a light duty tractor, although it will pull more than what people think. It has to be kept out of holes and was not designed to take deep holes and ditches that the driver doesn't know anything about. Other than that I have not heard about any problems with a C (on this forum during the last 17 years of so), except those who don't know where they were driving.

I agree. A set of frame rails could be fabricated to strengthen the bolster. A plate on the bolster and a plate on the side mounts at the clutch could be connected with 3X1.5" channel iron. Missing the air cleaner cup on the carb side would be the ugly part. The bolster and lower bolster are a long lever applying pressure to the bock on holes that are not too far apart. Jim
