Super C regulator bad?

Hi, I recently bought a Super C and it started fine the first half dozen times I mowed with it. The amperage gauge doesn't work. Today it wouldn't turn over. I bought a new 6V battery and amperage gauge. The first thing I notice is as soon as I pull out the switch the new gauge reads a 3 amp draw with nothing running yet. Normal? The tractor started right up and I noticed no amp charge while running, but the lights would pull up to 10 amps drain. So I put my DVOM on the battery and not running it reads 6.3Vdc. Running at low idle it reads 7.7Vdc and high idle it reads 9.5Vdc, but no amperage charge.

I'm assuming this tells me the generator is charging, but the regulator isn't regulating?

Thanks for any help,
Dan

You are correct. Either the regulator is set too high or the field wire is grounded somewhere.

Since it doesn't show any charging amps I think you will find the wire from the regulator is connected to the wrong terminal of the ammeter. There should be just the wire from the battery on one terminal and all the other wires on the other terminal.

There is just one wire coming from the regulator/generator area to one of the gauge terminals and then just one wire on the other terminal that goes to the starter switch stud and connects to the negative battery lead there. There are not multiple wires on either gauge terminal.

Alright, I have it working after I took the shotgun approach. I installed a different old original regulator I had from a non running C. I also made new wires for the Field and Gen connections. Now I have charge amps as needed.

Thanks,
Dan
