A friend has a Farmall 450 diesel, narrow front, fast hitch with 3 point adapter, new battery box, rebuilt injector pump, tires are fair, tin is good but needs paint, starts and runs , torque is good, live PTO is good, we believe the number 4 piston is broken, any idea on the value? Tractor is located in NW KS

possibly a rod, if you had a broken piston you would have it smoking out of that cyl. due to loss of compression. you would also see a lot of blow by. and also an engine miss. pull the pan and have a look in there then you will know.

Well I'm sorry you feel that way
Never seen one of those Pistons come apart
They are over built
We can't give a value till we know what's wrong
That engine is one of the most expensive
To overhaul
Usually $1000 per cylinder to do it right
I'm doing one now and have spent more than that but
I wanted a new 450D

You could have loose flywheel bolts or something
loose in the clutch department.

As Rust says---pull the pan--then you can see
if it's the rod that is loose.

To many variables to give an accurate answer. Give us PICS!!!! Also keep in mind that a MAJOR is needed if you have engine issues. A Major do it yourself is at least 2k I had a quote done for my 400D and it came back including pump and injectors at almost 5k!!!! So with that said it is worth what somebody is willing and able to pay. If he wants to get the best value for it he needs to do a refresh on the motor and hope that it truly is a wrist pin or a bearing and that it has been caught in time not to do any additional damage to the engine. Only because I could use it for parts if the motor is toast I would give $1500 for it.

If I was you,I would drop the pan and see what wrong. Watch the oil comming out when draining pan for pieces. You may be able to figure out what is wrong by what falls out. Then make a dicission on what you wanta do. If it gonna be more money than you want to put in it, put old oil back in it. If I was doing it I would just fix what is broke and no more. Remember there are alot of used parts around and they would be good enough to get it going. without spending alot. Just one question, does 450 hold good oil pressure? If it does everything just got cheaper maybe.
Good luck

Congratulations You and my wife agree on what's a waste of time for whatever that's worth.
If wanting to sell and no more information given I would guess 1100 to 1300 and maybe with PS 1500 tops. Good luck.

Well...
fair tires,
poor paint,
narrow front,
remote location,
bad engine with an undiagnosed problem that may or may not be very expensive to repair.

I'd price it as a parts tractor, $750 to $1500. If you can fix the engine you can double that estimate.

What do you mean remote location -- you expect a 500,000 city? I live in SW KS, maybe 100 miles south. Both areas are used for farming and has excellent soil, about half are irrigated.
